Jewellery Care
Taking care of your LuminousGEMS
To keep your LuminousGEMS pieces looking good as new for years ahead, some care is required. The lifespan of your jewellery depends on a number of factors, such as environmental conditions, skin chemistry, and how well you handle and care for the jewellery.
LuminousGEMS jewellery is delicate and full of symbolism, hence should be handled with care and dignity.
All jewellery is subject to wear and tear, and the plating may eventually lose its original shine. Damaging factors include water, perspiration, cosmetics, perfume, hairsprays, soaps, shampoos, the wearer’s skin chemistry and even chemicals in the air.
Here are some care tips:
Polish regularly to maintain the shine
- Polish your crystal jewellery regularly with a soft, non-abrasive cleaning cloth.
- Dirt and dust from normal wear can be cleaned off with lukewarm, even mildly soapy water, and a soft cloth.
- Rose gold is rich in copper (to give the rose colour), which can react to air and other chemicals to give a green discoloration, which is not harmful and can easily be cleaned with soap and water.
- Some of our products are made with sterling silver, which contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper – Pure silver is too soft to be used in jewellery crafting. Although the pure silver in sterling silver does not react and tarnish at room temperature, the copper added can easily react with chemicals in the air, making sterling silver tarnish over time. Be prepared to polish and clean your sterling silver more regularly in order to maintain their shine. It is best to polish and remove the tarnish as it first appears, avoid letting it build up. The good news is that with regular care, the tarnishing can be slowed down. In addition, a professional polishing will easily make your sterling silver jewellery look like new.
Remove jewellery during water exposure
- Avoid wearing your jewellery while exercising, doing dishes, bathing, showering or sleeping.
- Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first to be taken off.
Avoid immersing in cleaning solutions
- It is not recommended to use a dip or immerse your jewellery in any cleaning solution as this can loosen the gemstones settings.
- It is not recommended to use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia, or any chemical solution or abrasive cleaner to clean your jewellery. Being porous, crystal gemstones may absorb chemicals, which build up inside and cause discoloration. Chemicals can also be corrosive.
Protect from heat and direct sunlight
- Heat and UV rays can destabilize some colours, so avoid leaving your jewellery exposed to sunlight and heat for long periods of time. The heat and moisture from saunas and steam baths can also be damaging.
Handle with care and store individually
- To protect the delicate structures of your jewellery, be careful not drop them on the floor or knock them against hard surfaces.
- In storage, do not jumble several pieces of jewellery together. Protect your jewellery from rifts, scratches, chinks, cracks and other damage by keeping the jewellery pieces separate in a velvet or silk-lined pouch. Use tissue paper, a soft cloth or individual pouches to separate your jewellery, especially when traveling.
- It is not recommended to store your jewellery in the gift boxes, which are mainly for display and packaging purposes. Jewellery should ideally be stored in individual zipper plastic bags to avoid oxidization.
